1496- Santo Domingo became the first Western settlement in the Americas

1795- The island is ceded to France

1801- Haitians gain independence

1808- Santo Domingo people's revolt

1814- Spain regains title to the colony

1821- Spain is overthrown

1822- The island is reconquered by Haiti

1844- Under the leadership of Pedro Santana the Dominican Republic is established

1861-1865- The Dominican Republic is a Spanish province

1870- The United States refuses the request for annexation by the Dominican Republic

1870-1916- Unrest in the Dominican Republic

1916-1934- US Marines serve as a peace-keeping force in the Dominican Republic

1930-1961- Coup and Dictatorship of Rafael Leonides Trujillo Molina

1961- Molina assassinated

1962- Juan Bosch elected

1963- Coup

1965- President Johnson sent Marines and other troops

1966-2005 Democratically elected presidents serve for 4 year terms
